Workstation

Best workstation computers

Workstation computer is love for every productive man just like we gamers love gaming pc. Not only workstation pc’s perform best in 3d rendering and video editing, they can also be used for gaming. If you are going to buy your first or upgrade your workstation computer, then you should read this guide to get the latest and updated information on hardware.

A workstation pc “should” perform very well on any 1080p monitor and should have the power to support multiple displays. Every pc in this list is capable of at least handling three monitors at a time. And for rendering huge amount of pixels, the more you pay, the best performance you get.

Every person has a different budget and depending on that I have listed every possible workstation computer ranging from $700 to $5000. Each of the workstation pc’s power and benefits are listed in the descriptions. And according to your needs, you can select any of these workstation computers and ask your questions in the comment section if you have any doubt.

NOTE:- “I haven’t used any xeon or quadro graphics cards in any of these workstations because that has no limit. And the results of an i7 broadwell-E processor compared to Xeon processors having similar specs are nearly same but as i7’s are clocked higher, they outperform Xeons in many applications and are good for basic workstations that are used in homes or offices. The Xeon workstations are needed where you have a need of huge amount of horse power like Server workstations in which you also have to reduce the total power consumption overall. So this guide is for those who need a single powerful workstation for doing all the cpu intensive work.”

What it can do?

This workstation is an entry level rig and don’t expect it to be blazing fast but indeed it’s very capable of handling applications like AutoCad and video editing softwares. This rig is capable of handling 1080p videos without a problem but don’t go above that. The minimum requirement of a workstation to do this is to have at least 4 cores and 8gb ram. The ram can be increased to 16gb or more depending upon the workload. But 8gb will handle the applications just fine.

Not only it will work good for applications but it’s good for 1080p high settings gaming too. But as the basic purpose of this rig is not gaming, gtx 1050 ti is more than what you need. The workstations are mostly dependent upon processors but in video editing softwares gpu also play an important role in creating special effects in videos.

What features are you getting with this rig?

The i5 7500 is a budget processor for 3d rendering and video editing but as it has 4 cores/4 threads and powerful single core performance with high clock frequencies, it competes with i7’s and gets beaten by a small margin in several applications. I myself use an i5 for basic video editing and there is no lag whatsoever.

The motherboard is Micro-ATX and has some very good features like 4 DIMM slots which can support upto 64gb of ddr4 memories clocked upto 2400Mhz. So I used a single stick from Crucial Ballistix 2400Mhz 8gb ram to make the rig upgradable upto 32gigs.

The motherboard also has dual M.2 slots for NVME SSD’s. This was important as simple micro-ATX motherboards those with H110 chipsets don’t have this feature and B250 chipset has advantage in many areas. It’s more reliable and has better memory support. It has 6 sata ports and several chassis fan headers. Costing much less than $100, it has several features like that of a Z170 or Z270 motherboard with the exception of overclocking.

As for the storage, 1tb of hard drive is just to store your files but a 275Gb SSD is a must and will be used for installing O/S as well as some programs that take a lot of time loading.

The 500Watts power supply from EVGA is 80+ bronze which will deliver 85% of power efficiency when you put 50-80% of load on your system. Even if you upgrade your processor to an i7 or install an AIO liquid cooler, the power draw will be still low as the processor, memory and graphics card this rig is using are power efficient.

And the case is simple yet a silent one. The padding used in the case will absorb all the sounds coming from cpu fan, gpu fan and chassis fans. The workstation should not look like a gaming rig and should be noise free at the same time.

Check out benchmarks of a similar budget workstation pc.

What it can do?

It can possibly run all the renedering softwares like Octane Render, Iray, Vray, Mental Ray and more without a problem. Video editing will be even smoother with the gpu we are using. Even though the gtx 1060 6gb isn’t much needed but it’s just to make a good balance for your pc. The i7 7700K is a highly overclocked hyper threaded cpu. The 4 cores will be enough for the programs I mentioned with a little boost with hyper threading.

Some processors have more cores and lower clock speed but currently I can’t find anything equivalent to the i7 7700K when we want to build a mid end system with the latest available hardware.

This system is capable of encoding 1080p videos faster than the i5 and can also handle 1440p videos. I don’t recommend this rig for 4k video encoding and in case your requirements are higher, head up to the next workstation build which will serve you the best. But this system is still the best to fulfill the requirements of many video editors and people who work with rendering applications.

What features are you getting with this rig?

The processor is 4 core/8 threaded i7 7700K latest kabylake chip which has a very high clock speed and is overclockable easily upto 5Ghz. The more the frequency, the better will be the performance. On the memory side, you are getting the complete elimination of bottlenecks with 16gb of DDR4 Ram clocked at 3200Mhz.

The motherboard is some serious thing in this system which has every possible feature you would want to use or need. It can support upto 64gb of Ram clocked upto 3866Mhz, 6 Sata storage devices, 2xM.2 NVME SSD’s and AIO liquid cooler. It has 3xPCIEX1 slots for wifi/sound cards and a lot of fan headers to cool your system perfectly.

I have used this motherboard because it is one of the best LGA 1151 motherboards that supports overclocking as well as high end features.

Storage wise, you will be getting a single 2tb hard drive for file storage and a 500GB of SSD from Samsung which is 850 EVO series. With 500gb space, you can install windows as well as your rendering, video editing applications and even some video files to do work faster. But in case you are short of space, you can always upgrade to more and more space with new storage devices like NVME SSD or simple Sata SSD.

The graphics card is gtx 1060 6gb which will be used for creating special effects in videos and can also be used for gaming. It can max out any latest game today at 1080p as well.

The EVGA 650 Watts BQ unit is one of the best power supplies available today for a reasonable price which has 80+ Gold efficiency and will create lesser heat. The Supernova 650 watts edition is just what you need to power your components, overclock them or even upgrade your system with newer components.

The case is really something which you need for this workstation computer. It has sound absorbing materials that are fitted on top, front and side panels. The windowed version however has only one side with sound damping material but still the top and front panels will be enough for absorbing most of the noise. You can install a 240mm radiator or 2x120mm fans at the front or at the top. Or you can also install a 360mm radiator at the top. The case is sufficient for cooling and gives enough clearance area for cable routing. With modular design you can use the above 5.25″ drive bays or lower 3.5″ drive bays for Hard drives or SSD’s as well.

What it can do?

If you don’t want to compromise with the experience or with the speed of your system, then the X99 platform is the way to go. With this pc, you are completely free from any type of bottlenecks. CPU wise, memory wise, Storage wise and by every possible component, you will fully able to utilize it’s power in any possible program, be it AutoCAD, a video editing software or VFX.

It’s the first complete package which is not “So much” expensive and can be afforded if you are serious in your career in editing videos or Animation. This PC will help you encode your videos faster and edit videos at 4K resolution with smoothness.

The 3d rendering programs as we know use a lot of cores, the i7 6800K will help you a lot as it has 2 more cores and 4 more threads than the i7 7700K. Be the clock speed of i7 6800K is only 3.4Ghz, but you can overclock it easily upto 4.5Ghz with the Corsair H100i V2 cooler by increasing voltage and proper cooling of your case. The increase in clock speeds will definitely help you achieve better and more score in your programs.

Also 32gb of Ram is enough for any program and you will never be bottlenecked in this case. The rendering programs definitely use a lot of memory, and if you are in a habit of opening too many programs at once, the system won’t get hanged at all. Thanks to the 6 core processor and 32gb of Ram.

What features are you getting with this rig?

As you know the i7 6800K is a brand new Broadwell-E processor from intel’s side and fulfills the requirements of a workstation. The processor has 28 PCIE lanes which is much higher than the 16 lanes of i7 7700K. The PCIE lanes help in a huge way when you use high end components like PCIE SSD, multiple graphics cards or multiple NVME SSD’s.

Well I don’t recommend doing an SLI of two Gtx 1070’s in this build because it’s not needed but it will never bottleneck SLI of two graphics card if you ever wanted to do in future. The gtx 1070 will be more than enough and I don’t think going above it will make any sense if you don’t game at 4K. Infact the gtx 1060 6gb would have been enough but the reason to use a gtx 1070 is better performance in gaming to make your rig complete powerhouse for everything, as well as to make the rig balanced.

Storage wise, we have 3tb of hdd and 1tb of SSD. But this 1tb of SSD is the Samsung 850 PRO which is faster than the regular budget SSD’s like Crucial MX300 series or Samsung 850 EVO series. Increased space in SSD will help you to store your programs as well as the data files in the SSD itself. You can store your big video files in HDD and you can also create a backup of required important data for more safety.

The motherboard on the other hand is definitely a big deal. It has 8 DIMM slots that supports upto 128Gb of ddr4 memory clocked upto 3333Mhz. I am sure you will never be able to use that amount of memory but 4 sticks of 8gb of Ram will be enough for the next few years.

For powering all of those stuff, you require only 500 watts of power supply but I used the EVGA supernova 850 watts 80+ Gold PSU. I am sure you won’t run out of power even if you overclock every stuff you have. Even if you do two way SLI of gtx 1070 and add some fans, it will be still enough for further upgrades. The power supply is reliable and is 100% modular which will ensure neater wiring.

Taking all those stuff, the case I chose is Fractal Design Define R4 which is a very decent mid tower for the price. It’s silent and uses sound dampening materials at the front and the side panels. The routing holes have rubber grommets and for coo, ing it comes with two pre-installed 120mm/140mm fans at the rear and front.

This case is not for showoff and the system itself needs to be of high quality. The case is heavy as it uses high quality materials. If I would have chosen the window panel, it would have been a compromise for the silence.

This build is just perfect of any serious AutoCAD, 3d Rendering, VFX or Video editor and delivers unmatched performance at a price nearly equal to $2100.

What it can do?

The question should be instead “What it cannot do?”. Haha, jokes aside, this is a beast workstation. The most extreme high end computer for a single person who does a lot of 3D rendering or video editing at 4K. This in no means can lag or slow down in any possible condition.

The 10 core i7 6950X processor is the fastest workstation processor which has insane amount of power and can handle the toughest tasks. Along with 10 cores, the 20 threads will definitely help you in many applications. You can open multiple programs at once without even thinking of your computer getting hanged. Process your videos, use AutoCAD, render high quality 3D images at the same time.

It will perform more than your expectations. If you are really serious about your work, then this one should be yours. If you edit videos at 4K or do VFX, there is no better thing than this workstation pc. With 64gb of Ram and a high end graphics card like gtx 1080, there is no room for lag or slow down in any work. Game at 1440p or 4K, open programs at the background and see the result. Don’t listen to me just Do it yourself.

What features are you getting with this rig?

Again the silly question but you are getting every possible thing with this machine. The 10 core processor i7 6950X has 25mb of cache memory and 40 PCI lanes. It can go with upto 128gb of ddr4 memory and will easily support upto 4 way SLI of Nvidia graphics cards. Although, it’s useless to do a SLI in workstation, the gtx 1080 will be beast for any professional video editor.

As the processor is based on Broadwell-E architecture, it’s power efficient and has 14nm lithography just like the skylake and kabylake processors. The total TDP of this cpu is 140 watts and the base clock is 3.00Ghz. You can easily go above 4.0Ghz with a custom cpu cooler and earn a lot of performance. Do not hesitate to overclock it, it’s meant for that. However, the power consumption will increase a lot when you go above 4.0Ghz in stress tests. So I chose the 1000 Watts EVGA supernova Platinum power supply.

I think it will be enough for overclocking your whole system without a problem. You can add multiple graphics cards, more SSD’s, hard drives, Fans etc. and will still have a lot of room. The platinum power supply will ensure at least 90% efficiency which will dissipate less heat and deliver more power. The psu uses the highest quality japanese capacitors and reliable components that will protect your components from damage.

The motherboard on the other hand is the best you can get. The ASUS X99 Rampage V edition 10 has tons of features. In order to get the most our of your workstation, I chose this motherboard keeping the upgradability in mind. You can install upto 128gb of DDR4 memory overclocked upto 3333Mhz.

For storage, you can add upto 10 Sata drives. For best performance, I chose the 2TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD and for large files you have 4tb of Seagate hard drive. For even faster performance, a 1TB of NVME SSD is a must as it’s several times faster than a normal SSD. The sata ports as we know bottlenecks and don’t deliver the best performance. For a build like this a SSD that has read and write speeds upto 3500MB/s and 2100MB/s respectively is a must to load your windows and programs faster.

1tb of NVME SSD is a lot of space and you have 1 slot for that on your motherboard.

To host all these components, we have the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M with acrylic side panel to show off your workstation. To increase upgradability and install every part, this case is beautiful, silent and supports a lot of cooling components like Reservoirs, radiators and fans. As we are using the Corsair H100i V2 which is 240mm radiator, you can fit it on the top or at the front. To install a 360mm radiator, you can use the top area or even the front area by removing the ODD bays.

For making it silent, I have included the 3x Noctua NF-P12 120mm fans that you can use either at the top or at the front depending upon where you use your cpu radiator. Noctua fans are the best in case fan industry and you cannot find better fans than these which are having very good static air pressure and only 20dbA noise at full speed.

You get all of these for an expense of $5000 but the investment is going to last for at least 10 years. If you have any queries regarding any of the above builds, feel free to ask questions in the comment section.
