Motherboard vs Hard Drive- What is the difference between the two?

Motherboard vs Hard drive

Motherboard vs Hard drive

A fully functional computer has a number of components that work by coordinating with each other. Motherboard and hard drive are amongst the crucial components that have their way of working.

These components have different usage and work differently from each other and therefore can’t be compared directly. However, if you want to know how much different both of these are, then this post should clarify.

A Motherboard

A motherboard is a printed circuitry board that connects every computer component in order to allow the flow of data between the devices.

It is made with the help of a lot of electronic components like capacitors, resistors, Mosfets etc. and has a dedicated section for each computer part or function. Each section has its own circuitry that helps data flow back and forth from a connected component.

Unlike a hard drive, it is actually a central platform that doesn’t perform a particular function. It connects all the components in a way that they are able to access the data from each other instead.

Hard drive

A hard drive is a mechanical device that stores computer data. It uses disk platters, arms, actuators and several other components for Read and Write operations.

Unlike motherboard, it uses mechanical parts that are not static and therefore its data processing speed is slower as it depends on the speed of the motor. The typical size of a hard drive capacity starts from 80GB up to 8TB and its speed varies from 5400 RPM up to 7200 RPM.

Hard drive connects to a motherboard via IDE or SATA interface a motherboard can have multiple hard drives at the same time. A hard drive can store data such as software, operating system, games etc. permanently if not deleted manually.

A motherboard, on the other hand, can’t store data but can let the system processor access it.
