5 Best Power Supplies for Geforce RTX 4070

power supply

The Geforce RTX 4070 is currently the 4th fastest GPU in the ADA family and replaces the 3070 from the Ampere series. So, theoretically, you would assume that it is powerful enough to game at 1440p resolution and therefore, would consume a lot of power.

But to our surprise, the RTX 4070 is one of the most power-efficient GPUs and while it competes with the RTX 3080, it consumes 150W less.

Nvidia’s RTX 4070 even though is an overpriced GPU at $599, the card doesn’t fall behind in power efficiency delivering good performance without overheating.

In this post, we will take a look at what power requirements your rig will have if you are using a 4070 followed by our recommended power supply units.

Our Picks

Geforce RTX 4070 Overview

The RTX 4070 is based on the ADA Lovelace architecture and features 5888 Cuda Cores. It is based on TSMC’s 5nm process node which helps it to be more power efficient than its predecessors.

Rated at 200W of TGP, the card is pretty competitive to some mid-range GPUs in power consumption while delivering the performance of previous-gen high-end cards.

This helps it remain more compact than the higher-end 40 GPUs and doesn’t have problems fitting in normal-sized ATX cases.

As for its VRAM, It is equipped with 12GB of GDDR6X memory on a 192-bit bus delivering a total of 504.2GB/s of memory bandwidth.

Figuring Out Your PC Power Requirements

Even though the RTX 4070 requires just 200W to operate, it doesn’t mean that you can put a 350W PSU inside your computer because we have to calculate the total power consumption of all the components inside your chassis.

This includes your CPU(mostly), storage drives, chassis fans, coolers, etc. Except for the CPU, other hardware doesn’t have a lot of power requirements. So, it’s better to assume their total power consumption of around 50-100W considering you have a mid-range to high-end build.

As for the CPU, currently, most CPUs operate at 100+ watts. Unless you are using something like a Ryzen 7900, you should add up at least 150W of power consumption for the CPU alone and more if you plan to use an i9 13900K.

In total, the power consumption of all the components should be somewhere between 400-550 watts.

So, to be on the safe side, we are going with 550W and above power supply units that will allow further upgrades whether you will change your GPU in the future or put some more storage drives.

The unit is fully modular and boasts an 80 Plus Gold rating. Except in some minor areas, the unit is pretty excellent in the majority of areas whether you consider its operational noise, efficiency, ripple noise, and voltage regulation.

One of the greatest feats of this unit is its hold-up time which exceeds 26ms which is way above average and is one of the best features for users who have constantly fluctuating voltages.

The unit comes with a good 10-year warranty and is worth every cent you invest in it.

EVGA has so many options in its Gold-Rated PSU catalog and even though it can be quite confusing to choose between them, they are pretty close to each other in operation.

One of them is the SuperNova 750 GT boasting an 80 Plus Gold rating that and a fully modular design. Except for some minor cons like less efficiency on low loads and loose load regulation on minor rails, the unit is pretty solid in everything.

One of the best things about it is its compact size despite being a 750W PSU and can fit in many ITX form factor cases. It comes with a 7-year warranty and would be perfect for compact builds.

Final Words

Whatever PSU you go with, make sure you have enough headroom for smaller upgrades so that you don’t regret your purchase. Good quality PSU is a no-compromise and it’s better to invest more than to regret later.
